A look ahead to the Paralympic Games, as well as recent national golf championships and national and provincial lawn bowling.

A group of ten athletes, four coaches and one mission staff member will be in Paris to represent Saskatchewan and Canada when the Paralympic Summer Games start Wednesday.
Para cyclist Keely Shaw, who hails from Midale, Sask. and captured a bronze medal at Tokyo 2020, will be attending her second Games, as will Para swimmers Shelby Newkirk (Saskatoon) and Nikita Ens (Meadow Lake), men’s wheelchair basketball player Garrett Ostepchuk (Regina), sitting volleyball’s Julie Kozun (Melfort), and wheelchair fencer Ryan Rousell (Asquith).

Meanwhile, Regina’s Nik Goncin will be attending his third-straight Paralympics and will co-captain the men’s wheelchair basketball team.
Making their Paralympic debuts will be Saskatoon Para swimmer Hannah Ouellette, Saskatoon javelin thrower Ashlyn Renneberg and Humboldt Para rower Jacob Wassermann.
Joining the Canadian contingent as coaches will be Regina’s Frank Gaudet (Para badminton), Carla Nicholls (Para athletics) and John Wetzstein (Para rowing), as well as Saskatoon’s Ryan Jones (Para swimming), while Saskatoon’s Chris Dornan will be a part of the Team Canada mission staff.
The Paralympics will begin on August 28 and conclude on September 8.
Lawn bowling provincial and national championship results
Milton and Kitchener, Ont. hosted the Canadian Men’s and Women’s Lawn Bowling Championships last week, with Saskatchewan teams competing in each division.
On the men’s side, Regina Lawn Bowling Club’s Jonathan Pituley, Michael Pituley, Carter Watson and Brandon Watson, as well as Nutana Lawn Bowling Club’s Alex Scott, represented in all divisions from singles to fours. On the women’s side, Regina’s Jean Roney, Heather Hanoski, Janet Watson and Anita Nivala and Nutana’s Fran Allbright did the same.

All together, the Saskatchewan competitors captured silver medals in the men’s triples and women’s singles, as well as bronze medals in the men’s fours and women’s pairs.
Leading up to the national competition, provincial championships were held over the last few weeks.
In the provincial singles competition, Mayfair Lawn Bowling Club’s Bev Coutts captured women’s gold, while Nutana’s Cam McLelland finished first on the men’s side.
Coutts then partnered up with fellow Mayfair bowler Lorraine Layton to earn gold in the women’s pairs, with Regina’s Jonathan Pituley and Michael Pituely winning the men’s pairs.
The triples’ division saw Regina trio Roney, Hanoski and Janet Watson claim first place, while Carter Watson and Brandon Watson teamed up with Scott to win the men’s title.
The fours competition featured Nutana’s Heather Howard, Susan Livingstone and Eileen McLelland joining Regina’s Harriette Pituley to top the podium on the women’s side, while Jonathan Pituley, Michael Pituley, Carter Watson and Brandon Watson finishing atop the men’s teams.
Bailey leads SK golfers at Canadian men’s mid-am

After four rounds of competition from August 19-23 at the Carleton Golf & Yacht Club in Manotick, Ont., the Canadian men’s mid-am and mid-master championships wrapped up.
Swift Current’s Corey Bailey was the top Saskatchewan golfer in the mid-am event, finishing tied for 12th with a two-over 282, followed by Prince Albert’s Danny Klughart, who was tied 28th with a five-over 285 and Saskatoon’s Jehremy Ryde who tied for 57th with a 11-over 291.
In the mid-master division, Carnduff’s Kris Carley finished tied for 19th with a 12-over 292.
