Spike Lee, the Oscar-winning filmmaker at 67, voiced his backing for Vice President Kamala Harris on Instagram Sunday following President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the presidential race.
Lee celebrated Harris, commenting “once again a sista comes to the rescue.”
Katy Perry, joined in by expressing her support for Harris.
Shortly after news broke of Biden endorsing Harris as his replacement, she posted a brief clip of herself signing the lyrics to her latest song singing “It’s a woman’s world, and you’re lucky to be living in it,” alongside the caption “that’s it. that’s the caption.”
Both Lee and Perry were prominent supporters of President Joe Biden during his previous campaign.
Lee encouraged voters to ‘be on the right side of history’ in the 2020 election, while Perry lauded Biden’s choice of Harris as his running mate, describing her as ‘exactly the kind of leader with experience we desperately need right now.’
Lee, known for his outspoken political views, criticized Donald Trump during his re-election campaign and called on Americans to mobilize for the 2020 election in his Oscar acceptance speech for ‘BlacKkKlansman’ in 2019.
Trump responded by accusing Lee of launching a ‘racist hit’ against him, while Perry, who performed at the 2016 Democratic National Convention, has long voiced her opposition to Trump and publicly endorsed Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election.
