But pleasant as that is, I can’t help but wonder whether it needs to be as constant as your furry friend demands.
More specifically, I am talking about the mid-poop lock-eyed stare your furry friend may give you while doing their business (because nope, you’re not alone in getting those).

Well, some strangely cute news – according to Karen Piwinski, a certified dog trainer at Woofz, it’s actually a “compliment.”

Per Piwinksi, this is a sign your dog trusts you during their most vulnerable moments.
It’s one way to encourage you to “keep watch” over your very exposed pet.
In fact, she says, it can even count as a form of bonding (aww?).
“Having someone they trust close by makes them feel safer because their instincts return to the wild, where relieving oneself left them vulnerable to dangers,” she revealed.
Of course, sometimes the stare is more self-interested.
“Sometimes, particularly while potty training, dogs may also glance at you because they anticipate a treat after using the restroom properly,” the trainer stated.
What should I do when my dog makes eye contact with me while pooping?
It’s important to stay calm during the mid-BM staring contest, Piwinksi commented, because this is a moment in which your dog sees you as their protector.
“The best course of action is to remain composed, avoid making loud noises or abrupt movements, and most importantly, avoid laughing,” she shared.
“Additionally, if making eye contact is awkward, avoid doing so, and don’t interrupt unless it’s absolutely necessary.
“Maintaining a calm posture will help some dogs feel more secure because they may also be watching you to make sure the surroundings are safe. Your role as their defender is strengthened when you provide that silent support,” she ended.
