A member of staff at Runwize Sports Wallingford, opposite the cafe, confirmed the fire was at 900 Cafe. She said she didn’t see the fire, but that St Mary’s Street was still closed to cars and pedestrians.

In a statement, the fire service said: “Oxfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service were called at 07:23 on Wednesday February 12, sending three fire engines from Didcot, Abingdon and Slade fire stations, and a rescue vehicle from Kidlington plus a hydraulic platform from Rewley Rd fire station (Oxford), to St Mary’s Street in Wallingford.

“Smoke and flames were coming from a roof. Four firefighters in breathing apparatus and with high pressure hose reels entered the building where they extinguished a fire between the first and second floor.

“The cause of the fire is being investigated.”

In a post on the Wallingford Town Council Facebook page, they said the fire has now been put out.

“A building fire in the town centre has meant road closures. The fire is now out but the building is being assessed before reopening.”

900 Cafe has been contacted for a comment.
