Mull mansion formerly owned by Genesis up for sale after falling into dereliction

Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford invested £500,000 in the estate, which overlooks Ben More, but sold it in 1997.

Genesis were accused of allowing the main house to fall into disrepair, with John Gerrard, civic trust director, telling The Herald in 1992: ”The building is listed and known to be in a poor state of repair. Its owners are responsible for keeping it in a better condition.”

A spokesperson for the group said: “The house was damp. Genesis meant to demolish the two wings and restore the main building. However, restrictions imposed by the trust and steady criticism has halted the work. Why the house is listed baffles me.

“It would probably cost more today in recession to restore the house than the whole estate is worth on the market.”

When they sold the estate to Dutch investors Labour MP Brian Wilson said: “There will be very few tears shed in Mull over the exodus of Genesis.

”Having bought the land for whatever reason, they very seriously mismanaged it.”

The entire estate was put on sale for offers over £5m in 2021, but now the nine-bed Mull mansion is being offered for sale for offers over £180,000.

The Rightmove listing states: “Once the focal point of Pennyghael Estate, the house now lies in a derelict state but offers a wonderful opportunity for the next custodians to either restore the current house or develop a new property elsewhere on the site, subject to the necessary permissions being obtained.

“Planning permission was granted in 2007 for the demolition of parts of the existing building and restoration of the remainder. The house, as it is, stands in a commanding position in its landscape overlooking the former walled garden, grazing and mixed woodland. In all, Pennyghael House sits in approximately 11.9 acres.

“Viewing strictly by prior agreement with the selling agents who should be contacted in advance to advise on access arrangements. For the personal safety of interested parties, please be aware of potential hazards at the property as the building is a state of disrepair.

“A liability waiver will be required to be signed and returned to the selling agents prior to any viewing.”
