Re: Donald Trump and Mark Carney meeting in Washington on Tuesday.
Ah, yes, “Will you walk into my parlour?” said the spider to the fly. This opening line of the 1829 poem by Mary Howitt tells of a cunning spider who entraps a fly in its web through flattery and manipulation. After dismissing Pierre Poilievre as “the Conservative who hated me more,” Trump called Carney a “very nice gentleman” and expects to have a “great relationship” with Canada when they meet at the White House. Oh pul-ese, grab a bigger scoop to shovel you-know-what. Tarantula Trump versus Casualty Carney. It will take a while to secure the political knots, but Canada will be tied up and held fast just like that “silly little fly.”

DYAN CROSS

(Perhaps. But we would submit Trump is equally susceptible to flattery)

Divided we fall

I wish Premier Smith wouldn’t show her support for an Alberta referendum at this time. Yes, I’ve always thought Alberta was a reflection of Texas with your cowboy hats and love of the Stampede while having oil and gas deposits similar to Texas. I’m sure Trump would love you as his 51st State with your mineral wealth, along with the beauty of your Banff. Quebec separatists are taking note and so is Newfoundland. Give our new PM a chance. Together we are strong, but divided we’re fodder for our neighbour.

PETER J. MIDDLEMORE Sr.

(Perhaps our new PM will surprise us)

JT’s leftovers

I wouldn’t exactly be holding my breath, expecting great things to emerge out of Mark Carney’s cabinet in Ottawa. For the most part, it will be Justin Trudeau’s recycled players for the lost 10 years in Ottawa.

DONALD K. MUNROE

(Team Carney looks an awful lot like Team Trudeau)

Unfair treatment

In the trial of the junior hockey players, I’m not sure why the complainant has been subjected to so much abuse by the defence attorneys. Seven days of gruelling testimony are ridiculous. While I understand that each defence attorney wants their turn to examine the accuser, I think that the court has allowed them to harass the young lady beyond the pale. We’ll see if the players get the same amount of examination when it’s their turn; it would only be fair.

GEORGE COLGAN

(Trials like this are challenging.)

Hope Pierre stays

I hope Pierre somehow stays leader of the Conservative Party. The guy knows what Canada needs. The Conservatives would regret not keeping him as their leader.

TOBIN McCARTNEY

(Hopefully he’s learned something from this latest experience)
