Dozens of people were spotted “removing money from the scene and fleeing the area” by foot and in vehicles, according to the Oak Park Police Department.
The money was stolen from a Brinks Home Security Co. truck when its “back door opened by unknown means,” according to a complaint filed to police.
Three bags full of money fell onto the road in the Village of Oak Park.
When the driver realized what happened and turned around, they saw dozens of people removing money from the bags and fleeing.
A Brink spokesperson told WMAQ that the loss was around $300,000.

No arrests have been made. Police continue their investigation of the “theft of lost or mislaid property,” and are appealing to anyone who collected the money to return it voluntarily.
