An infant made an extraordinary recovery from a severe infection that had affected his liver, kidney and lungs in just 48 hours at Narayana Health SRCC Children’s Hospital in Mumbai. Rudra Jha (name changed), a 1-year-7-month-old baby, was brought to the emergency at Narayana Health SRCC Children’s Hospital in Mumbai in an almost unresponsive state.
Initially, the patient was seen by Dr Paresh Desai, Senior Consultant – Pediatric Medicine at Narayana Health SRCC Children’s Hospital in his OPD. Dr Desai immediately advised the parents to rush to the emergency room at the hospital. The child was gasping for each breath, had cold and blue hands and feet, and his blood pressure was not stable.
His parents were distraught as they recounted three days of constant vomiting, diarrhoea, and declining consciousness.
- Upon arrival, a team of doctors led by Dr. Soonu Udani, Medical Director and Head of Paediatric Critical Care Services and Dr. Aoyon Sengupta, Senior Consultant in Critical Care at Narayana Health SRCC Children’s Hospital, quickly sprang into action. They started life-saving measures, including establishing IV access and administering fluids.
- The infant was swiftly transferred to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), where he was put on a ventilator to help him breathe. Medicines were given to stabilize his blood pressure, and antibiotics were used to fight the infection.
- The doctors found that Rudra had a severe condition involving an extensive infection on his scalp, which caused blood poisoning and septic shock. This affected his liver and kidneys, caused pneumonia in both lungs and suppressed his bone marrow, leading to very low blood cell counts.
The Infection Was Hazardous And Posed A Threat To The Child’s Life

The infant’s parents were extremely grateful to the multi-disciplinary team at the hospital for taking good care of their child and saving his life.
- “Rudra’s recovery is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our medical team. We are committed to taking care of every patient with the utmost compassion and professionalism.” Within 48 hours, Rudra’s condition stabilized, and his organ functions improved as the infection was controlled. After seven days, he was taken off the ventilator and eventually went home, fully recovered.
