An American couple who tried Greggs for breakfast revealed their favourite item from the menu – and it wasn’t the sausage roll.
Globe trotters Jeremy and Cara spent seven months touring the UK and in that time they could not avoid some of the 2,600 Greggs stores. And the YouTubers, who run the Magic Geekdom channel, have now released a video called: “24 Hours Eating ONLY British Fast Food.”
They decided to start off by eating breakfast at Greggs and it was everything they could have hoped for – aside from one let down.
The explorers visited the beloved British bakery after some of their 74,800 subscribers told them you could customise a breakfast roll, something they did not realise on their first trip.
However, in a rare circumstance, a vital machine was broken meaning this was not possible, so the Greggs they were in could only offer prepackaged food. But this wasn’t the real let down of the day.
Jeremy emerged from the shop with a premade vegan sausage sandwich and a side of hash browns.
But after taking a bite of the latter, Jeremy said with a shrug: “It is a hash brown… it is fine.” Cara was equally unenthused, adding: “The hash browns taste like I think you would expect for something that has been sitting in a hot case for a while.”
However, the rest of their meal was much more enjoyable, and Cara concluded: “That was very tasty. I feel like Greggs is a very divisive company. However, if you are wanting a quick cheap meal, they really have it covered.
“We don’t have anything like it in the US and I feel like it is really underappreciated and I would love it in the US. Could Greggs come to the US?”
After a disappointing hash brown, Jeremy was surprised by the quality of his sandwich, saying: “The vegan sausage is pretty nice. It has got a very sagey flavour to it and the texture of the bread is nice. It is pretty good, I like that.”
Cara also expressed being pleasantly surprised, saying: “That’s really good! We have corn products in the US but we don’t have a delightful sausage that is savoury in this way – this is so good.
“We have like maple flavoured breakfast sausage. This is much better in my opinion and the roll is really nice and soft. It is so good. Since it was a prepackaged item I was expecting it to be unimpressive but it is really nice. I like it a lot.”
However, saving the best until last, they both took a bite of a chicken bake, and expressing his delight, Jermey laughed: “Yeah, it is actually really good. I agree, it is one of my favourite Greggs things we have had.”
After posting the video on YouTube, one fan replied: “I’ve never classed Greggs as a fast food place, I’ve always associated it as a bakery, their steak bakes are delicious.”
A second said: “Please don’t judge the UK food by Greggs. It’s generally cheap on the go food… but the festive bake is great!” Another person wrote: “Could Greggs go to the US? Please! Take all of them!”
A fourth said: “Never have I been to Greggs to get told they can’t do bacon and sausage. You got very unlucky.”
