Police speak on stabbing after altercation at pub




Niko Gjika, of Mckeevor Place, Banbury, and Harry Reading, of Middleton Road, Banbury, were sentenced after an incident in Banbury on September 1 last year. 

Gjika, 47, pleaded guilty to one count each of section 18 wounding with intent and possessing a knife in a public place.

Reading, aged 24, was sentenced to one year and six months in prison at the same hearing.

Reading was found guilty of section 18 wounding with intent following a three day trial at Oxford Crown Court on April 22, 2024.

At around 12.05am on September 1, Gjika and Reading were involved in an fight with another man in Market Place, Banbury.

The victim, who is in his 30s, left JT Davies pub and was followed by Gjika who picked up a steak knife.

A second altercation followed in Bolton Road Car Park and the victim attempted to flee. He was grabbed by Reading and held whilst Gjika stabbed him.

Police officers saw the victim in the Market Square and first aid was administered before South Central Ambulance Service attended.

He sustained serious injuries, requiring hospital treatment.

Gjika was arrested on September 5 last year and charged the following day.

Reading was arrested on September 19 last year and was charged the following day.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Gareth Steward said: “Thames Valley Police is committed to removing weapons from our streets I hope this sentencing shows that anyone who carries and uses our knife can expect face the courts.

“Knife carrying will not be tolerated in our communities and public are key to us tackling knife crime.
