The weekend that began Saturday with sun and spring-like temperatures in Ottawa ended like a lion Sunday with rain, high winds and dropping temperatures.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement early Sunday warning of rainfall amounting to between 10 and 20 mm in Ottawa. The statement also warned of localized flooding in low-lying areas and water pooling on roads, noting that the frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb the rainfall.

Winds from the southwest were expected to gust up to 70 km an hour ahead of a cold front in the afternoon. The statements also cited a “risk” of thunderstorms in the afternoon, ending by about 7 p.m.

Sunday’s high was expected to reach 15 C in the early afternoon and drop to 9 C later in the evening.

Monday’s forecast was for cloudy weather and temperatures continuing to drop from a high of about 8 C early in the morning to minus one late in the day. More spring-like temperatures are expected to return mid-week.
