Premier pledges to help after plane flips at Pearson airport

Premier Doug Ford expressed his relief that there were no reported casualties after a plane flipped and crashed at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday afternoon.

“I’m relieved there are no casualties after the incident at Toronto Pearson. Provincial officials are in contact with the airport and local authorities and will provide any help that’s needed,” Ford said on the social-media site X.

The air ambulance service Ornge said three people, including a child, were critically injured. Paramedics at the scene originally said one person was critically injured, while seven others were hurt.

The airport confirmed the crash involved a Delta Air Lines plane arriving from Minneapolis, Minn.

Images posted on social media show the plane flipped over on the tarmac.

Officials said all of the roughly 80 other passengers and crew were accounted for and were not believed to be injured at this time.

“Delta flight from Minneapolis flipped on landing at Pearson. Wings lost. Only 8 of 80 passengers injured,” Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish, whose municipality encompasses the airport, said in a post to X. “Quick action by Peel Paramedics. No deaths, thank goodness. That’s why attendants tell everyone to (fasten) seat belts. Arrivals and departures suspended due to heavy winds.”

Federal Transportation Minister Anita Anand said on X that she was “closely following the serious incident at the Pearson Airport involving Delta Airlines flight 4819 from Minneapolis. All 80 passengers onboard are accounted for. Updates will follow.”

The quick response by emergency crews was being heralded as potentially life-saving in the immediate aftermath of the crash.

“It’s a miracle that everyone survived this crash,” one social media commenter said.
