In a shocking incident, a 17-year-old girl reportedly delivered a female baby in the toilet of her hostel in the early hours in Eluru town on Sunday. She threw the baby from the terrace of the building into the neighbour’s house.
The girl was studying Intermediate and was staying in a hostel at Ashok Nagar. Police and the Women Development and Child Welfare (WD&CW) Department officers found that the infant, who was thrown from a height, was dead.
“The minor girl gave birth to a female baby in the toilet, took bath, cleaned the bathroom and reportedly threw the baby from the terrace of the hostel building,” said an officer.
“We received a call to ‘Dial 112’ around 7 a.m. and rushed to the spot. The body of the infant was found in the compound of a house adjacent to the hostel,” said Eluru Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) D. Sravan Kumar.
The minor girl was studying in a nearby college and had been staying in the hostel for the last two years. About eight girls were staying in the room in which the girl delivered the baby, the officers who visited the hostel said.
The team led by Mr. Sravan Kumar, Eluru Town Town CI Ramana, SI Naga Kalyani and District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) Ch. Suryachakra Veni visited the scene of offence.
The WD&CW and the police officers were inquiring on why the hostel staff failed to identify the girl who was nine months pregnant, how she concealed her health condition during pregnancy.
“The hostel was running without obtaining permission from the government. We questioned the hostel management, staff and other students of the hostel. There were no admission, medical and maintenance records of the students,” the WD&CW officers said.
“We shifted the body of the infant to Government General Hospital (GGH) mortuary for post-mortem. The Eluru Two Town Police registered a case and took up investigation,” the DSP told The Hindu on Sunday.
“The mother was admitted in the hospital and her condition is stated to be stable,” the WD&CW officers said.
